In Japan, the term "Imperial Clan" (皇族, kōzoku) generally refers to members of the extended imperial family, including those who are not in the direct line of succession but still hold an imperial title. 

The "Imperial House" (皇室, kōshitsu), also known as the Imperial Family, specifically refers to the reigning Emperor and their direct family members who are in line for the throne. Essentially, the Imperial House is a subset of the broader Imperial Clan. 

Imperial Clan (皇族, kōzoku):

- Includes all individuals descended from past Emperors, even those who are not in the direct line of succession. 

- Members may hold titles like "Imperial Highness" (親王, shinnō for males, 内親王, naishinnō for females).

- Some branches of the Imperial Clan have historically been given surnames and split off as cadet branches, but they were still considered part of the larger Imperial family.

Imperial House (皇室, kōshitsu):

- Specifically refers to the Emperor and their immediate family, including the Crown Prince/Princess and their families. 

- This group carries out the primary duties and functions associated with the monarchy. 

- They are seen as the central symbol of the state and unity of the people. 

- The Emperor's direct descendants inherit the throne and continue the lineage.
