Brief Bio

The Imperial House of Japan, also known as the Imperial Family or the Yamato dynasty, traces its origins to the sun goddess Amaterasu, according to Japanese mythology. Emperor Jimmu, traditionally dated to 660 BCE, is considered the first emperor and a descendant of Amaterasu. The Imperial House is the world's oldest continuous hereditary monarchy, with a lineage of 126 recognized rulers.

The House consists of the dynasty, imperial family of Japan and members of the extended family of the reigning emperor of Japan who undertake official and public duties. These duties as an emperor are passed down the line to their male children. The imperial dynasty has no name, therefore its current members do not have a family name. However, the house may informally be termed the "House of Yamato"
