In Japanese mythology, Hachiman is a syncretic Shinto deity primarily known as the god of war and archery, but also revered for his association with peace, prosperity, and the protection of Japan. He is often depicted as the deified form of Emperor Ojin, the 15th emperor of Japan. Hachiman is also a patron of warriors, particularly the samurai, and is believed to have aided Japan in crucial moments, such as repelling the Mongol invasions.
