- Aztec death gods and underworld rulers whose festivals led to modern day Mexico's Día de los Muertos celebration

Brief Bio

Mictlāntēcutli and Mictēcacihuātl were the Aztec god and goddess of death and the rulers of Mictlān, the lowest level of the underworld. Mictlāntēcutli, the "Lord of Mictlan," is depicted as a skeletal figure who challenged Quetzalcoatl to create humanity, while his wife, Mictēcacihuātl, the "Lady of the Dead," oversaw the bones of the dead and the ancient festivals that led to the modern Day of the Dead
