Key Points / Halloween Connection

- Irish dish of mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale which has small trinkets hidden within that are used to tell one's fortune for the upcoming year

Brief Bio

An Irish Halloween tradition centers on serving colcannon, a dish of mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale, to divine the future. Small trinkets were historically hidden in the dish, and the object a person found in their portion was said to foretell their fate for the year. This was part of a larger Celtic harvest festival, Samhain, when the barrier between the mortal and spirit worlds was believed to be at its thinnest.
