- American Christmas treat that become a trick-or-treating favorite due to their appearance and connection to Samhain and the harvest season
Brief Bio
Candy apples became associated with Halloween after New Jersey confectioner William Kolb created the first red candy apple in 1908 by accidently dipping apples in cinnamon candy for the Christmas season. Candy apples became a staple of fall, Halloween, and other festivals due to their festive appearance and connection to the apple harvest season.
The treats were popular for trick-or-treating until the 1970s when widespread rumors led to fears that malicious individuals were hiding razor blades and other harmful objects in the candy apples which made them a fall festival treat rather than a trick-or-treat giveaway.
Today, candy apples are enjoyed as a celebratory fall treat and a nostalgic symbol of the season, often made or purchased at fairs and carnivals
