In East African mythology, Shetani (plural mashetani) are spirits, often malevolent, found in various forms and possessing different powers. They are a popular subject in carved artwork, particularly among the Makonde people of Tanzania, Mozambique, and Kenya. Shetani are believed to be neither fully human nor animal, often appearing as distorted human and animal figures.
